EDINBURG – A dozen more Hidalgo County residents have died from complications related to COVID-19 and an additional 347 more people learned that they have tested positive for the virus, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said Sunday.

“Unfortunately, the death toll continues to mount but I remain hopeful that August will be a better month for Hidalgo County than July,” Judge Cortez said. “We must remain committed to staying safe by staying home.”

The total number of known positive cases in the cases now stands at 17,353. Of these, 4,649 are considered active COVID-19 cases. New hospital numbers were unavailable on Sunday. As of Friday, there were 813 people hospitalized because of the disease with a total of 234 people in intensive care.
