Twenty more people die in Hidalgo County from COVID-19 related illnesses; 501 others test positive for the virus

MONDAY, 8-24-2020

EDINBURG — Over a two-day period Hidalgo County saw an additional 20 people succumb to the COVID-19 virus and 501 more learned that they have tested positive for the disease, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said Sunday. There was no reporting Saturday so these numbers reflect two days of activity.

“These grim numbers continue to mount suggesting the virus remains dangerously active in our region and that our residents can do more to protect themselves,” Judge Cortez said. “My deepest condolences go out to the friends and families of the 20 who have died. My prayers are with them and with the community that continues to endure the effects of this dreaded disease. With the help of our cities, we should commit to exercising even greater caution to avoid the virus, which starts by staying home unless absolutely necessary.”

The additional deaths over the weekend bring the total number of fatalities in Hidalgo County that are attributable to COVID-19 to 1,091. The total number of known positive cases now stands at 24,494.
