Twenty people die due to COVID-19 complications; 782 tested positive for the virus

WEDNESDAY, 8-26-2020

EDINBURG Twenty residents have died due to complications related to COVID-19 and 782 people tested positive for the virus. The total number of positive cases is 25,951.

“My heart goes out to the families and friends that have lost a loved one,” Judge Richard F. Cortez said. “The CDC suggests the best way to protect yourself and reduce the spread of the virus is to limit your interactions with other people as much as possible and to take precautions when you do interact with others. This includes washing your hands frequently, covering your nose and mouth with a face covering, clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily, and monitor your health.”

Judge Cortez acknowledged that the number of positive cases has risen, but noted that much of this rise in numbers can be attributed to the Department of Health and Human Services clearing up a backlog in testing results that has arisen both locally and statewide. Several new cases being reported this week, for example, can trace tests that were administered as early as June.

There are currently 2,556 net active cases and 690 people were released from isolation on Tuesday, meaning that they have been symptom-free for 10 days, including three days without a fever.
