McAllen-based nonprofit receives $10K donation

It seems a local nonprofit received a generous gift for the holidays — in the form of a charitable donation.

Women Together, or also known as the Mujeres Unidas Foundation, announced Thursday that IGT donated $10,000 to the nonprofit that will fund a variety of resources that are needed in order to help rehabilitate, educate and support domestic violence victims, as well as their families.

The McAllen-based nonprofit has helped and served victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault since the late 70s.

“These new resources will support the Women Together Foundation in carrying out its core mission to provide shelter and support services to victims of domestic violence and survivors of sexual assault and their families while providing community education, awareness and prevention programs to those they serve,” the nonprofit said in a release.

The donation will help fund 26 weeks of General Education Development, as well as English as a Second Language courses, the release said. In addition, the funds will allow the organization to purchase to tablet to help in the education process of those who attend. More importantly — for the betterment of the families — a rainbow playground set will also be funded by the donation.

The executive director of the Women Together Foundation said the donation will help improve the lives of those who need its services.

“IGT’s generous contribution is truly a lifeline for the women and children we support. The playground will bring moments of joy to children who are processing their trauma, and the GED and ESL programs will empower women to build brighter futures for their families,” said Estella De Anada, Executive Director of the Women Together Foundation in a release. “With these resources, women and their families can heal, stabilize and remerge into the community stronger, full of confidence and hope the future.”

Joseph Lapinski, IGT Account Development Manager in Texas, said that IGT was honored to contribute and help fund the efforts of the local nonprofit.

“At IGT, we believe in strengthening communities through meaningful partnerships. The Women Together Foundation’s mission to provide sanctuary to victims and opportunities for growth aligns with our values of empowerment and community support,” Lapinski said in a release. “We are honored to contribute to their efforts, knowing this donation will profoundly impact survivors and their families as they build lives free from violence and fear. Together, we hope to build a foundation for brighter futures for families in the Rio Grande Valley.”

According to its website, IGT is a “global leader in gaming.” The organization specializes in delivering gaming experiences for those who play — from lotteries, gaming machines, sports betting and more.

State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa resonated with the sentiment. He said that the donation will further help empower local families within the Rio Grande Valley communities.

“Women Together has been a pillar of the Rio Grande Valley community for decades, providing victims and their families with much-needed a refuge from the trauma they have experienced,” Hinojosa said. “Their work is vital in helping individuals and families in our community find safety and security, and I commend IGT for their important contribution to the Women Together Foundation, which will help support recovery and empowerment for women and their families in our communities.”
