Celebrating a century: McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge hits historic milestone

"For a century, it has connected people, businesses, and opportunities while serving as a catalyst for economic growth and regional prosperity." — Javier Villalobos, McAllen Mayor

McALLEN — Community leaders, local officials and international representatives gathered here at the convention center Friday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge.

Heralded as an international gateway, the bridge has served not only as a physical connection between the United States and Mexico, but it also symbolizes a relationship that continues to grow.

The bridge has proved to be an impactful tool in helping strengthen regional economic development, international trade, tourism, and of course, as most in the Rio Grande Valley has seen firsthand, the cultural exchange.

Among the attendees was McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos, who spoke on the impact and the significance of the bridge.

On the same sentiment, Hidalgo Mayor Sergio Coronado and Reynosa Mayor Carlos Peña Ortiz spoke about the binational cooperation and the strength of partnerships between border cities.

More so, Texas State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa and City of McAllen Assistant City Manager and Superintendent of Bridges Juan Olaguibel emphasized the historical structure as well.

Villalobos said that the bridge continues to mold the community for the better.

“The McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge has been instrumental in shaping our community’s success for the past 100 years,” Villalobos said. “For a century, it has connected people, businesses, and opportunities while serving as a catalyst for economic growth and regional prosperity. As we celebrate this historic milestone, we also look ahead with a shared commitment to strengthening infrastructure that will ensure this gateway continues to serve our community and support binational collaboration.”
