Cinderella’s Odd Couple: Ben and Pocahontas

Special to the Advance

This week, Cinderella is featuring a couple of pooches who have formed a sweet relationship while at our shelter. She’s Pocahontas, a Siberian Husky and he’s Ben, a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Viszla cross.

He is tall and handsome — a dog of the world, with a cinnamon coat accented by a white chest and four white paws. He was used to taking long road trips with his former adoptive family and enjoyed meeting new people and other dogs. He lived the good life with people he loved, who loved him in return. But sadly, his family broke up and couldn’t keep him. He never expected to wind up back at the Cinderella shelter, where he started his life, almost 11 years ago.

She’s a short-haired, blue eyed Siberian Husky, symmetrically marked with a black, tan, and white coat. She’s a sweet young thing, only about a year and half old. Who knows what she was thinking the first time she laid eyes on Ben, who is twice her size and old enough to be her grandpa. All we know is that Pocahontas decided, on the spot, that this big seasoned stranger was hers to guide and protect from the other dogs at the shelter, and make sure they give him the respect he deserves.

Ben didn’t have a lot of time to wonder what had happened and why his life had changed so drastically, because this pretty Husky stepped right up and claimed him. He accepted this youngster as his mentor. She “showed him the ropes” of life at the shelter, and introduced him to her favorites among the other dogs. They have been constant companions ever since.

Pocahontas has good taste because Ben is a very mellow dog who has been described as “the perfect gentleman” — well-behaved and friendly. Admittedly, at almost 11 years, Ben is an old dog. The dusting of white on his face attests to his “senior” status. However, he is an active, healthy dog in great condition. He’s sweet and affectionate and he has a lot of life and love left in that big, 85-pound body.

Both Ben and Pocahontas are good with people and with other dogs, but they are especially good with each other. He’s neutered and she’s spayed and they’re both up to date on their shots. Either of these great dogs would make a terrific family pet, but we at Cinderella are hoping that they might find their forever home together so Pocahontas can continue to look out for her big friend and he can continue to enjoy her looking out for him. We realize it will take a special family to adopt these two together, but we’re hoping that they will not have to be separated since they clearly love each other.

If you think that you might be the right person, or family to take these two buddies into your life, home and heart, please fill out the online adoption application for them on our website, www.cinderella-pet-rescue. org, or call us for more information at 391-4399.
