Gutierrez censure is historic

Wednesday’s PSJA ISD Board meeting worth the time to watch

The June 25th PSJA ISD Board Meeting to censure Trustee Cynthia Gutierrez is worth the 1 hour and 18 minutes it takes to watch. Local school governance that made local history, because unless someone can offer up a name, this was the first time that a Valley school district has censured a board trustee.

If you have the time, the meeting makes for some interesting viewing – youtube. com: PSJA School Board Meeting June 25, 2025.

In the end, the vote to censure Gutierrez was 5-1 with one abstention, Griselda Quintanilla, who didn’t explain why.

Which seems odd to more than a few people considering how tight the two have been, politically speaking, in recent months. Yet when it came time to support her friend, Quintanilla stepped away.

The five trustees who voted to censure Gutierrez include – Diana Serna, Carlos Villegas, Yolanda Castillo, Ramona Barron, and “Rick” Rodriguez.

If you watch the video of the meeting, it’s clear that no one looks like they wanted to be there.

A district lawyer from O’Hanlon, Demerath & Castillo, Eric Flores, the son of former state rep “Kino” Flores and a former federal prosecutor, was selected to referee the war of words, as it were. If you watch the meeting, it’s clear that he earned his pay that night (June 25).

The official response from PSJA ISD regarding the vote to censure Gutierrez Wednesday is pasted here in its entirety.

Calling the censure a “personal vendetta,” Gutierrez tells the five who voted in favor that “this will not get you reelected.”

In total, she took 30 minutes to refute the charges made against her.
