Along the Mexican border these days, the relatively small city of Eagle Pass, with its population of 28,130 (2020 Census), has been the focus of both state and national news when it comes to people trying to cross the river and enter the U.S.
The ink was barely dry on a law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott that makes unauthorized entry into the United States a state crime before a lawsuit was filed by civil rights groups and El Paso County challenging its constitutionality.
A recent story published in the New Yorker carried this headline: “Why the Godfather of A.I. Fears What He’s Built.”
Last week, The Wall Street Journal published a story that carried this cheery lead paragraph: “Hundreds of thousands of migrants from all over the world are making their way to the Southwest border, with U.S. and Mexican authorities reporting a surge in apprehensions of people from Asia and Africa as human smuggling networks widen their search across the globe.”
Earlier this month, May 4, the U.S. Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley sector reported that approximately 2,400 illegal immigrants mainly comprised of family units, single women, and/or unaccompanied minors were apprehended, most of them on a voluntary basis.
