Pharr hosts turkey distribution for families in need

The city of Pharr’s fire department recently held its annual Thanksgiving Turkey Distribution on Nov. 25 to help local families who are in need during the holidays.

The city announced that it provided turkeys and all the works to 100 families — helping them put food on the table during Thanksgiving.

For about 20 years, the fire department, along with the city’s police department, band together in an effort to serve those in need during the holiday seasons.

The city said that through donations from the community and businesses, departments are then able to supply meals and more to families from the Rio Grande Valley who are in a bit of a struggle.

The city is able to find and identify families in need through linking up with school districts, such as PSJA ISD.

City Manager Jonathan Flores was at the distribution, helping the cause.

“We are proud to continue this long-standing tradition,” Flores said. “Thanks to the generosity of our community and our dedicated first responders, we can ensure that families across Pharr have a warm and joyful Thanksgiving meal.”

Pharr said the event and effort “highlights” the city’s initiative toward unity.

“The City of Pharr is grateful to every donor and volunteer who came together to support this year’s distribution,” the city said in a release.
