In Remembrance: Edinburg to honor 90 fallen heroes

With Memorial Day around the corner, the City of Edinburg invites the public to gather in remembrance during its annual Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony on Friday.

The event is slated to start at 10 a.m. at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium. If you’re wondering where that is, it’s located just behind City Hall.

The city said that the ceremony will be “meaningful” for the sentimental moment that comes with remembering those who have fallen.

“This meaningful ceremony will pay tribute to Edinburg’s 90 fallen heroes — all brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the United States. Their courage, patriotism, and selfless service continue to inspire the community and serve as a lasting reminder that freedom is never free,” Edinburg said in a release.

The event will be free and open to the public.

The city also said that there will a keynote speaker from Gunnery Sgt. Juan Rodriguez-Chavez.

Rodriguez-Chavez, was part of the USMC and a recipient of the Navy Cross.

The ceremony will have a musical tribute and a Battlefield Cross presentation by the Edinburg High School JROTC Honor Guard.

In addition, a 21-gun salute by VFW Post 8788, and the Presentation of Colors by the Marine Corps League of the Rio Grande Valley Detachment 1456 will be presented. Members of American Legion Post 408 will read the names of the city’s fallen heroes as well.

More so, Gold Star families — who are those who lost a family in military service — will be recongized “Memorial Day is a sacred opportunity for our community to pause and honor the extraordinary men from Edinburg who gave their lives in service to our nation,” said Mayor Omar Ochoa in a release. “As a Hometown of Heroes, we are committed to preserving their memory and ensuring future generations understand the profound cost of the freedoms we enjoy today.”
