Weslaco High School’s mariachi group takes first place at festival
This past weekend, the City of Edinburg — along with the South Texas Music and Cultural Arts Foundation — hosted its second annual South Texas Mariachi Festival.
The two-day event was held at the Edinburg ACE in which aspiring middle and high school musicians are able to dive deeper into the genre to learn more about it.
More so, schools along with its students competed against one another to see who would take the top honors.
This year, Weslaco High School’s Mariachi Pantera took home the first place trophy in the 6A High School Division.
The festival paid tribute to iconic women of the music genre, La Canción Ranchera. Special guests included Alberto “Beto” Jiménez Maeda, Jonathan D. Clark, Josué “Eddy” López, Antonio “Tony” Zúñiga, Nereida García, Vanessa Alonzo, and Mariachi Aztlán with Chamber Orchestra, according to the event’s website.
