One dead, another injured in University of New Mexico shooting
A shooting in the early hours Friday has left one dead and another injured at the University of New Mexico.
University police received a report that gunshots were fired at one of the housing options available on campus — more specificially, the Casas Del Rio housing communitiy.
Reports by several news outlets in the Albuquerque area — such as KOAT Action 7 News — said that the suspect has been arrested by authorities.
A shelter in place had been issued to students as the suspect remained at large at the time of the shooting. Out of caution, the university had closed its central campus.
The identifies of the deceased and injured have not yet been released.
The president of the university sent out a statement addressing the shooting situation. Garnett S. Stokes, the UNM president, said that state and local law enforcement remain on the scene and the area has been secured. Stokes said with safety being a top priority, the campus remains closed for the day.
First-year orientation dates for new students had been scheduled throughout the summer — from May to August — in which incoming students undergoing the program get the chance to learn more about the campus. According to the campus website, there was orientation slated for this past Thursday and Friday (July 24 and 25).
"We understand this incident may be especially distressing for new students and their families who are here this week for orientation," Stokes said in the statement. "We want to assure everyone that we are fully committed to your safety and well-being. Future orientation activities will continue, with additional support in place."
Stokes said that he is deeply saddened by the death and the shooting incident. He also emphasized that those from the university community who feel "overwhlemed, angry, or afraid" can utilize the service the school has.
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and horrified by this act of violence in our campus community," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers go to the loved ones and friends of those lost and injured."
