Born in the Jefferson Davis Parish of Louisiana, then raised in the Midwest during most of my younger years, I moved to Virginia when I was 15. I went from a high school in the Chicago suburbs that had one black kid on the books to one in Virginia Beach where it was about 30 percent black.
