Born in the Jefferson Davis Parish of Louisiana, then raised in the Midwest during most of my younger years, I moved to Virginia when I was 15. I went from a high school in the Chicago suburbs that had one black kid on the books to one in Virginia Beach where it was about 30 percent black. If I look at a photo of the varsity football team I was on in my junior year in Virginia, it looks like we had six black players on a 40-man squad.
