Edinburg breaks ground on Freddy Gonzalez Hike & Bike Trail

City secures $700k grant for project; ultimate goal of connecting trails to Hidalgo County Hike & Bike Network

EDINBURG — The city of Edinburg broke ground on Phase 1 of the Freddy Gonzalez Hike and Bike Trail last Friday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. The ceremony took place at the Ebony Hills Golf Course on the corner of 9th Ave and Mark S. Pena Drive.

The first phase of this project will include a 10ft wide mile-long concrete hike and bike trail, 8ft-wide crushed caliche path, painting of a mile-long protected bike lane, as well as some street restriping. Phase 2 of the Freddy Gonzalez Hike & Bike Trail will add an additional two mile stretch of the 10ft-wide concrete trail.

The city of Edinburg launched its Active Edinburg initiative in December of 2020, which focuses on increasing the health, wellness, and quality of life for its residents. Since the launch of Active Edinburg, the city has opened multiple municipal dog parks, hosted its first-ever triathlon, increased program offerings to include new events like Edinburg Outdoor Expo, and much more. While participating in outdoor activity can be a great way to work toward a happier and healthier lifestyle, the city’s main priority continues to be ensuring the safety of our residents. It’s why the Freddy Gonzalez trail project also includes not only restriping, but also the painting of an additional mile of protected bike lanes.

This $1.9M city project is made possible thanks to a $700,000 contribution from the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization, as well as the continued support from our community partners-Hidalgo County Drainage District, Hidalgo County Irrigation District #1, city of McAllen, the Ebony Hills Golf Club, and H-E-B Park.
