Edinburg honors lost sailor

By Gregg Wendorf Advance News JournalThe City of Edinburg honored a hometown U.S. Navy sailor last month, Jose Antonio Saenz, lost in the horrific Japanese-torpedo sinking of the USS Indianapolis on July 30, 1945.Of nearly 1,200 men on board, 900 survived the initial attack and sinking, but after four days in open waters, only 316 returned home to their families. With few life vests and fewer lifeboats, the rest were lost to exposure, dehydration, and constant attacks from Tiger sharks that exceeded 10 feet in length.The USS Indianapolis first popped up in modern culture with the publication of the novel,
