Learning God’s Will (Part III of IV)
How does God make known His will to us?
God did much in showing us His way for us when He made us. We are born with certain talents and abilities and God expects each of us to use these gifts to do what we can do.
God blessed builders with the ability to build homes, blessed the farmer with the talent to farm, the teacher has the gift of teaching, and sales people were given the ability to sell and merchandise. On and on I could go but it is clear that one way of knowing God’s will in our lives is understanding the talents and abilities God has bestowed upon each one of us. We can also know God’s will in our lives by considering our opportunities. Each of us can be sure that God provides the opportunity for the carrying out of His purposes. I still vividly recall the phone call I received from Reverend Rodney DeGroot of First Christian — Mission in the summer of 1995. Rodney invited Pam and me to a small barbecue in his home honoring Rev. Earnest Miller for all of his work with Habitat for Humanity. During a conversation with Rev. Miller, he asked if I might substitute for him in the pulpit so he could take a vacation.
I said I would and asked, “Where?”
“Donna,” Rev. Miller replied.
“Donna?”
“Yes, Donna.”
Let me ask you — was it just an accident the Rev. DeGroot invited me to his barbecue honoring Rev. Miller? Was it mere chance that Rev. Miller, who would not live very many more months, would request for me to be his substitute in the Donna pulpit? No.
I believe the hand of God was moving upon my life and the will of God was made evident by this opportunity in my life.
Our talents and our opportunities can tell us much about God’s will for our lives. And as we look back, we may also see how special circumstances led each of us to certain decisions and directions — circumstances that suspiciously seem to have the hand of God moving in them. Godly incidences.
Next time: One final way to know God’s will in our lives, considered, in the conclusion to “Learning God’s Will.”
