City of McAllen takes step forward with Unified Development Code

Since the adoption of the Envision McAllen Comprehensive Plan last May, the City of McAllen has been working on its accompanying development code rewrite. This initiative marks a step forward in the City of McAllen’s vision for a more resilient, walkable, and innovative community, a Monday release by the city said.

The new Unified Development Code is designed to make the development process faster and more agile by consolidating McAllen’s various development ordinances — including subdivision, zoning, landscaping, and signage — into one cohesive document. Developers will now be able to find answers more easily, eliminating the need to search through different sections of the municipal code.

“The UDC aligns with the award-winning Envision McAllen Comprehensive Plan and streamlines processes that help us meet our longterm goals for the city,” said Edgar Garcia, City of McAllen Planning & Zoning Director. “We are introducing changes like streamlined zoning, mixed-use zones, reduced parking requirements, and improved bicycle infrastructure. These changes will also allow for more diverse housing options and give our staff greater discretion, reducing the need for variances.”

The City of McAllen is planning to hold several stakeholder meetings in the coming weeks to discuss the proposed changes and gather input.

“We welcome feedback from our community to ensure the UDC serves everyone,” Garcia added.
