Vela victorious over Memorial; PSJA North cruises

This week of Rio Grande Valley Football proved to be like the previous weeks. Unbeaten squads went toe-totoe, while others scrapped on the field for a win.

Vela 56, McAllen Memorial 0

Quarterback Geoffrey Lefevre threw for four touchdown passes as Edinburg Vela rolled over McAllen Memorial 56-0 in a battle of then undefeated District 16-5A Div. 1 undefeated teams.

Vela exploded out to a 42-0 lead at the half.

Lefevre, a senior, threw for 282 yards on 18-for-22 passing. He tossed a pair of touchdowns to Jay’r Guevara and one each to Juan Garza and Noah Rocha. Jonathan Flores added 101 receiving yards on a game-high seven catches.

Flores also rushed for 197 yards and just 11 carries (17.9 yards per carry) and scored four times on the ground as Vela racked up 500 total yards to Memorial’s 228. Memorial ran off 59 plays to Vela’s 46.

PSJA North 42, Weslaco East 0

The PSJA North defense allowed just 116 total yards to Weslaco East and the Raiders improved to 6-0 in District 15-5A Div. 1 with a shutout over the Wildcats.

North will play Flour Bluff, also 6-0 in district at Flour Bluff on Friday. In district, Flour Bluff has scored 313 points and allowed 50 while PSJA North has scored 279 points and allowed just 35.

Ethan Guerra rambled for 195 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Andrew Alvarado also scored two on the ground and Daren Garcia added one for the potent Raiders rushing attack.

Stevan Garza, Rey Martinez and Jesse Montez paced the defense with 14, 12 and 11 tackles respectively.

Alan Alejoa tallied 16 tackles for the Wildcats.

PSJA 24, Weslaco 16

PSJA rallied from a 14-0 deficit to beat Weslaco in a key district matchup.

Jorge Alanis got the Bears on the board with less than a minute remaining in the first half on a 1-yard score. He added a 7-yard reception for a touchdown late in the third quarter to give PSJA the lead at 17-14. Then, PSJA quarterback Myles Lopez secured the victory with his second touchdown pass, this one to Caleb Salas from 35 yards.

Lopez finished the game with 204 yards, completing 18 of 32 passes. He also rushed for 51 yards while Alanis added 88 on the ground.

The Bears stand atop District 31-6A with a 3-0 district mark (6-2 overall). Edinburg High and Weslaco are both 2-1 and PSJA already defeated Edinburg 28-6 earlier this season.
