Edinburg mayor to not seek re-election due to cancer diagnosis
Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. announced Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Garza Jr. — who was elected in 2021 — said that he will serve the remainder of his term. However, he will not seek re-election.
"After a routine (doctor's) visit and subsequent tests, I have been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer," the mayor said in a social media post. "While this comes as a complete surprise, I plan to fight this head on and I am confident I will beat it. After consulting with my family and prayer, I have decided to not seek reelection for Mayor. I fully intend to complete my current term and wanted to make this announcement to focus on my health and give others the opportunity to prepare for a run. Please keep me and my family in your prayers as we deal with this situation."
