24-year-old mother arrested following February infant death
EDINBURG — A 24-year-old mother was arrested in connection to her 2-month-old daughter's death in February.
Edinburg Police Department reported that Viridiana Nieto was arraigned last week and charged for the death of the infant. Nieto was charged with Criminally Negligent Homicide, Endangering a Child, Possession of a Controlled Substance (THC vape pens) and Possession of Marijuana.
An investigation by the department revealed that Nieto during that time had "reportedly been on a drug binge and had allegedly slept most of the day."
Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of S. Raul Longoria on Feb. 10 around 6:20 p.m. to assist EMS personnel with an unresponsive infant. It was then officers found the 2-month-old infant unresponsive — in addition, two other children were at the scene. The children were ages 1 and 4
"The infant was transported by EMS to Edinburg Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later," an Edinburg release said.
Although the death of the infant was in February, a warrant was issued for Nieto's arrest on April 21. According to a release by Edinburg, authorities took Nieto into custody on May 6 — they learned that she was in Fort Worth. Last week — May 15 — is when she was formally arraigned.
Her bond was set at $1,532,500.
