Local school districts to provide free summer meals for children
A couple of local school districts announced that they will provide free summer meals for its students.
As the summer and the heat start to make themselves welcome, McAllen ISD and PSJA ISD are set to give children the proper nutritious meals they need to make it through the upcoming months.
McAllen ISD, along with the city of McAllen, recently announced the return of the Summer Meals for Kids Program, which provides free meals to children and teens 18 and under. The program will run until July 31 at the McAllen Public Library, located at 4001 N. 23rd St.
There will also be multiple meals sites throughout the community who will continue to provide meals until Aug. 8, according to a release.
“This program ensures that every child in McAllen has access to healthy meals even when school is out,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos in a release. “We are proud to work with McAllen ISD to support families and children in our city during the summer months.”
No registration is required — meals will include breakfast, lunch and snacks, which will be provided at participating locations (schools, libraries, community centers, parks). The library will have lunch served Monday through Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. Snacks will be distributed from 3 to 4 p.m. At other participating locations, breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. Those who plan on visiting a food site are encouraged to look at the hours online at their corresponding location.

Meals will be distributed until June 27. Then they will start again Aug. 4 until Aug. 15.
“PSJA ISD students need yearround support, and our Child Nutrition staff is ready to assist,” said PSJA Child Nutrition Administrator Pedro Contreras in a release. “With nearly 2 million food-insecure children in Texas, these nutritious meals are essential for nourishing our students during the summer break.”
Tentative school site serving times will have breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. Lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
At the Alamo Youth Center, from Monday to Friday, breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. Lunch is at noon until 12:30 p.m. At the Pharr Parks & Recreation Summer Camp at Pepe Salinas Building — Monday to Thursday — breakfast is at 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Then lunch at noon to 1 p.m.
