Veto the brain-dead THC bill
Open Letter To The Governor:
Greg, may I call you Greg, albeit I’m a Gregg, and you’re a Gregory?
Okay, Gov. Abbott it is. Yes, sir, I know, I’ve written some critical things about you in the past, but some nice ones as well. Not all bad. Some good. I think you’re just seeing the negative stuff.
As a governor, for example, I’d sure mark your grades as governor much higher than those of your predecessor, Bick Derry. Sorry, Rick Perry. The governor most of us would like to forget.
I will never, ever, however, ask forgiveness for anything I have ever written about our low-brow lieutenant governor and former radio jock, Dan Patrick.
His latest bit of insanity, of course, was his strong desire to ban THC, even in the low levels now sold at THC/Vape/Hemp stores, less than 0.3 percent of the real stuff that can prove intoxicating. Banning it was third on Patrick’s list of getting things done this legislative session, which just ended at the start of this month, and dang if he didn’t convince enough of his GOP homies to go along with him.
“For the sake of the kids,” was one of his more common refrains. In political circles, “for the sake of the kids” is always a winner.
While the kids are soaking up the real poison, AKA, the socially accepted alcohol, wiping out people on Texas roadways, old Dan is going after the mom-and-pop shops who have sunk tons of money (for them) into opening one of these storefronts since the THC farm bill was passed a few years back (too lazy to look up the year), and unless you, my most favorite governor ever, veto this stupid bit of legislation, it’s going to cause harm to many, many Texans.
As you must know, Patrick and the state GOP say, sure, TCH access may be cut off from patients with chronic pain, PTSD, and a host of other assorted ailments, but we’ve liberalized the state’s medical THC program. People who fit certain profiles can still get it.
You, as governor, my most favorite one ever, did I already mention that, must know that this is easier said than done.
For the vet with chronic pain, for example, suffering from PTSD, you must know how much the state will be asking of him, or her, unless you veto Sentate Bill 3, which would prohibit, without your veto, the possession of consumable hemp products that contain any synthetic cannabinoid, often known as Delta-8.
The deadline to veto this brain-dead bill is June 22.
Please veto it. In this week’s issue (June, 18, 2025), The Advance News Journal published an excellent piece published by The Texas Tribune about this very matter — the harm SB 3 will do to people who can least afford a change in access to low-level amounts of THC to combat some serious health issues.
Please, ask anyone you know who suffers from chronic pain, and ask them how that affects their quality of life. Or ask the vets who suffer from PTSD, courtesy of a tour in Iraq or Afghanistan, how Delta 8 has given them a new lease on life.
Why Dan Patrick wants to strip from them this access to pain relief, a way to reclaim their life, or improve the quality of it, one only knows.
I guarantee you, though, it’s not for the “sake of the kids.”
It either has to do with money or votes.
If he gave a damn about “the kids,” he would grant them easier access to artificial contraception and mandate sex ed back into Texas schools. Duh.
But I digress. Please, please (I don’t often beg), veto SB 3.
For the sake of the people who are among those who most need the relief THC can provide. Have a heart.
Again, please take time to read The Texas Tribune story.
I am sending you a copy of it, attached to this email.
With Respect (provided you veto Senate Bill 3).
