No holding back: Week 2 of football sees high scorers
The second week of the Rio Grande Valley high school football season had a bunch of points put up on the board.
On both days — Thursday and Friday — multiple teams turned to the passing and rushing game to get their point marks to the upper 30s — some even hit the 40s. One team made school history — Economedes — by surpassing their original score total.
Edinburg Bobcats, 19 Edinburg Vela, 6
Although offense is a sight to see when it comes to the scoreboard, there are times where defense is a lot more appealing.
There was a tale of two cats between the original Edinburg Bobcats and the newest one, Edinburg Vela.
The Bobcats’ defense got the job done by holding Vela to only six points and capping off their yardage at 171 yards for the game.
Bobcat defenders David Garza, Diego Gonzalez and Tyler Galvan helped lead the pack by each averaging about three tackles for a loss in the matchup.
On the offensive side of things, Aidden Sanchez went 10-16 in the passing game, with 209 yards under his belt. He also threw one touchdown. For the Vela SaberCats, Galvin Castillo threw a touchdown and receiever George Fauls had himself seven receptions and 85 yards.
This is the first win for the Bobcats in football over their intracity rival in over 10 years.
Weslaco Panthers, 31 McAllen Memorial, 24
This was one of the games that people had on their radars, too.
With both squads coming off a win in Week 1, it was a match to see who would take home the first loss in their respective seasons.
Both teams here are pretty darn good at scoring. Last week, Weslaco put up 49 in their opening matchup against the Harlingen Cardinals. The McAllen Memorial Mustangs put up a solid 37 against Brownsville Hanna.
The Panthers though, just had a bit more offensive push behind Chris Luna. Similar to last week, Luna showed that was able to maneuver the field both in the passing and rushing game.
He went 6-7 on the night and threw himself two touchdowns. He also had a rushing touchdown on 9 carries. Kane Coy, quarterback for the Mustangs, had a solid night himself with 132 passing yards and one touchdown.
However, one of the decisive moments in the game was the one interception which was picked off by the Panther defense during the late game.
On the rushing side, Braxton Speights, had himself 131 yards on 20 carries. Coy had 54 yards on 12 carries.
