Southeastern Louisiana spoils UTRGV’s winning streak
The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley’s four-game winning streak was snapped this past Saturday as the Vaqueros fell in their conference opener.
In a Southland Conference matchup against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions at their house, the home team took the dub, 45-31.
The Vaqueros had a very rough first half as they found themselves behind, 28-10.
At one point, the Lions were leading the game 42-17. UTRGV had a bit of difficulty stopping the offensive prowess from the Louisiana squad as the Lions racked up 540 total yards on the night.
One of the difficulties came from Kyle Lowe — a dual- threat QB who had himself 122 passing yards and 96 yards rushing.
The orange squad did show that they weren’t ready to let up as they had a solid fourth quarter — outscoring the Lions, 143.
Those football fans who kept a keen eye on the schedule pretty much knew that this was going to be a game similar to when UTRGV played Prairie View A&M.
More so, the squad from Louisiana operates at the Division I level. Meaning, it was going to be a tough night — especially, since it was an away game.
However, UTRGV did show some of that offensive flair against the Lions, similar to how they have been playing since the start of the season.
The Vaqueros had 457 total yards for the night. Even more, they had 19 first downs on the night. The second half showed glimpses of the offensive attack that UTRGV is capable of when the gears start to turn.
Receiver Tony Diaz, who is one of the more notable receivers for the Valley team, had himself 113 yards receiving.
Another noteworthy trait of the game was the Lions possessed the ball for about six minutes over UTRGV — which in games where a comeback is needed, the team who is trailing desperately needs the ball.
The Vaqueros return back to Edinburg with a game against Houston Christian University.
The conference game is set for Saturday at 7 p.m.
