County Judge responds to government shutdown
The federal government is currently shutdown after Congress deadlocked and hit a stalemate in its failure to reach a funding deal.
The deal relies on the passage of a bill that funds governmental services. In layman's terms, the different branches of the government have to come to a compromise in its spending plans.
Usually, a shutdown unfolds in a slow manner, effects will be felt as time moves on and the shutdown is still in place. For example, government employees will feel the effects of it firsthand. Those deemed essential and non-essential will see the changes — some still report to work, while others may be put on unpaid leave.
Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez recently released a statement in regard to the shutdown.
“I want to reassure the people of Hidalgo County that county departments receiving federal funds are not expected to be immediately impacted by the government shutdown," he said. "Essential services will continue, and county operations remain in place for the time being. This includes services provided by WIC, Department of Health and Human Services, Hidalgo County Head Start Program and the Urban County Program."
Cortez also said the county is going to be keeping an eye on the situation as it continues.
"However, we recognize that a prolonged shutdown can have ripple effects in our community. We are monitoring the situation closely and working with our partners to determine the total possible impact," he said. "Our priority is to ensure that county residents continue receiving the services they rely on, and we will keep the public informed as more information becomes available.”
