UTRGV recuperates, wins at home against UIW

Set to play Stephen F. Austin on Saturday

The Oct. 18 loss to Lamar University stung for the Vaqueros but they didn’t let the past drag them down this weekend as Incarnate Word came to the Valley for a conference game.

UTRGV looked refreshed and ready as they won the matchup on Saturday by the score of 56-28. The Vaqueros are now 6-2 on the season. In conference play, they stand 2-2.

The orange squad exploded on the offensive front as they finished the night with 548 total yards and 23 first downs.

More so, the zero turnovers on the night looked nice on the stat sheet as well.

Incarnate Word also had a decent night of yardage against a tough UTRGV defense. The Cardinals — who were the defending Southland Conference champs last year — did put up four scores and finished the night with 440 yards.

A tough season for the Cardinals for sure, the Incarnate Word team was one that had high expectations this year and also saw themselves on the national scale in terms of ranking.

UTRGV QB Eddie Lee Marburger had a near flawless game for the Vaqueros as he went 26-36 on passing. Marburger had 6 TDs on the night and took home 440 yards. Another athlete that was in the spotlight for the Vaqueros was Tony Diaz who brushed off the loss against Lamar and came back this game with 172 yards on 17 receptions. He had a touchdown as well. Xayvion Noland had himself 2 touchdowns as well, on four receptions. Noland had a total of 155 yards on the night.

The UTRGV Vaqueros are set to face nationally ranked Stephen F. Austin University on Saturday in Nacogdoches.

The Lumberjackers are ranked No. 23 in the nation.
