Last week of district play for football proved memorable

Playoffs set to start Thursday, Friday

It’s a bit humorous — and difficult to determine what’s faster — time or some of the athletes during this football season.

The final week of the regular season has come and gone. Teams are now getting ready to square away for their bi-district matchups.

This season, however, had some highlights for its final week.

Weslaco wins district, spoils Econ’s undefeated season

Both of these cats have been having some solid seasons this year. More notably, the Economedes Jaguars (9-1, 4-1) really turned some helmets around with their run-oriented offense. On the other side, the Weslaco Panthers (8-2, 5-0) really carried their own by capturing the District 31-6A championship with a 37-13 win over the Jaguars.

The offensive prowess of the Panthers was on display as QB Chris Luna helped lead the effort with not only a thrown TD to Joseph Leal, but also scrambling for two of his own. On the ground, Malachi Rodriguez had two scores on 10 carries. He rushed for about 111 yards with his longest being for 46.

The Jaguars had a tough time getting their groove on as the Panthers swarmed on the defensive side of things. For the Jaguars, John Carreon led the effort with 12 carries for 110 yards and one TD.

Both teams are set to play on Friday as the Jaguars take on Los Fresnos (10-0, 4-0) at their house. The Panthers take on San Benito (2-8, 2-2) in Weslaco.

McHi takes dub over the Warriors

The Bulldogs over at McHi finished their regular season play with a fourth-straight victory. The purple squad took the win, 23-7, over intracity rival Nikki Rowe.

Hunter Morley led the offensive effort for the Bulldogs with two rushing touchdowns. He finished with 165 yards on the night on 22 carries.

On the defensive side of things, Eli Schwarz grabbed an interception for the Bulldogs. In addition, Bryan Perez — who plays middle linebacker — had a team high 12 tackles.

The McAllen Bulldogs will face the Flour Bluff Hornets on Friday.
