Edinburg man sentenced to 25 years for aggravated assault

EDINBURG — On Thursday, Juan Jesus Reyes Jr. was sentenced by a county judge to 25 years in prison following his conviction for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

A release by the county said that the jury found Reyes, 34, guilty on Dec. 10, 2025, after a four day trial in the 476th District Court. Judge Luis Singleterry was the one who imposed the 25-year sentence for the Edinburg resident.

The sentence and conviction stems from a Feb. 26, 2023 roadrage incident that occurred in Progreso. Evident that was presented during the trial showed that Reyes, as well as two co-defendants had pursued a 16-year-old driver and two juvenile passengers following a traffic dispute, a release by the county said.

In addition, the release said that testimony and surveillance video demonstrated that Reyes had attempted to force his way into the victims’ vehicle during the incident while at a traffic signal. Afterward, he then chased the vehicle for a few miles.

“Video evidence further showed Reyes slashing one of the vehicle’s tires. After the vehicle stopped near a relative’s residence, Reyes pursued the teenage driver on foot and stabbed him in the back as the victim attempted to seek safety inside the home,” a release by the county said.

The county release said that Reyes had a prior federal conviction for conspiracy to smuggle undocumented immigrants. Due to that, he was subject to an enhanced punishment range under state law.
