Vaqueros sweep Nicholls in baseball series
The University of Texas- Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros (10-10, 5-4) recently completed a three-game sweep this past weekend against conference foe, Nicholls State (11-11, 3-5).
The series is part of an extended road trip that UTRGV has been undergoing since March 10, in which they suffered a loss to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.
This past Sunday, the Vaqueros sealed the deal against the Colonels as they garnered 8 hits in their 7-4 rout.
Pitcher Kike Cienfuegos (3-0) earned his third win of the season by serving as relief for Mason Engel. Engel only allowed two hits in four innings off of 67 pitches. As for Cienfuegos, he only allowed two runs as well off of 37 pitches. Both had a strikeout each. Anthony Garcia served as a closer — he had two strikeouts.
Hitting wise, Diego Villescas made his presence known on the play with two hits and an RBI. Ethan Edinger had a hit for a double RBI.
On Saturday, the Vaqueros won the second game in the series by raking up 11 runs off of 11 hits. They won 11-7, but the Colonels were savvy at the plate with 10 hits of their own.
The Friday game went into 10 innings as the Vaqueros took the 2-1 win after Austin Stracener singled to left field for an RBI.
The road trip for the Vaqueros still continues as this week they are scheduled to play Rice, as well as undergo a three-game season series against SLC opponent — the Houston Christian University Huskies.
Afterward, they play against the Texas State Bobcats on March 24.
They will return back home to Edinburg on March 27 to play Corpus Christi in a three-game series..
