Pharr EDC contributes $189K to support local teachers
The Pharr Economic Development Corporation recently contributed $189,000 to the Region One Education Service Center teacher alternative certification program to support 45 local teachers who live or work in the City of Pharr.
The funds will assist in covering partial program costs for participants pursuing certification over the next two years.
“This is about investing in people and education,” Pharr EDC President and CEO Victor Perez said in a release. “We want to help the individuals who are called to teach to focus on their education and not financial obstacles.”
Last year, the Pharr EDC contributed $21,000 to support five future educators who were from Pharr.
The purpose of the partnership between Pharr EDC and Region One ESC is to increase the amount of certified educators, as well as reinforce teacher preparation and retention — more so, in the betterment of long-term student outcomes.
“This support from the Pharr EDC allows aspiring teachers to pursue certification while continuing to provide for their families,” Dr. Daniel P. King, Region One ESC Executive Director said in a release. “We are thankful to the City of Pharr and the Pharr EDC for their support.”
