Vaqueros snap seven-game skid
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s baseball squad has been in a bit of a funk recently as they were on a seven- game losing streak.
However, this past Sunday, the Vaqueros (15-20, 10-11) took the last game in a threegame series against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (20-17, 11-7) by the score of 9-3.
In a game where UTRGV never trailed, the Vaqueros’ bats were hot as they garnered up 11 hits on the night. However, the Lumberjacks were also fairly solid at the plate as they racked up 10 hits.
Pitching wise, Kike Cienfuegos earned his fifth win of the season through six innings. Cienfuegos had three strikeouts on the night.
Armani Raygoza was the spark for the Vaqueros early and throughout the duration of the game as he started the offensive groove in the first inning with an RBI to left centerfield. Raygoza had 4 RBI on the night.
More impressively, he had a home run in the eighth inning to bring in two runs and to solidify the deal against Stephen F. Austin. The home run is his 11th of the season.
Julius Ramirez, a former PSJA Bear, had the team’s second home run in the sixth inning as he homered to right field. The homer is his 9th of the season.
The team traveled to Sam Houston State University and won 8-5 in 10 innings.
The UTRGV Vaqueros will return back home this weekend as they face the Southeastern Louisiana Lions in Edinburg, starting on Friday.
The games on Friday and Saturday will start at 6:30 p.m. The game on Sunday will begin at 1 p.m.
