PSJA Memorial pulls off district win against McHi

ALAMO — The PSJA Memorial Wolverines (17-14, 7-7) showed some poise and character here at home as they defeated the McHi Bulldogs (11 12-2, 9-5) by the score of 3-1 on Friday.

It was a bit of a grudge match for PSJA Memorial as the first time these two faced in a District 31-5A contest, McHi edged past the Wolverines by a single score.

This time around, the Wolverines were able to buckle down on the defensive front by holding the Bulldogs to a single score that happened in the second inning. Pitcher Averey Luna — who also was the pitcher during the first time around against McHi — pitched the entire seven innings to earn the win.

Despite being down the single run going into the third, the Wolverines were able to earn two to gain the advantage. The third run for PSJA Memorial came in the sixth inning.

This week has been a totally different PSJA Memorial squad as the Wolverines initially had a five-game skid throughout the duration of March.

Earlier in the week, the Wolverines were able to gain another win over the McAllen Memorial Mustangs by the score of 12-1.

In that game, the Wolverines were able to earn themselves 12 hits on the night.

The Wolverines, if all things go to plan, may find themselves in a playoff position since they are currently in sixth place within District 31-5A. The way it works is that the top four teams within a district make the playoffs. However, in this specific district, Edinburg Vela, McHi and Sharyland all have identical district records.

So, with two games left this week for all the squads, depending on who wins or loses determines if PSJA Memorial can sneak into that fourth spot.

The Wolverines played Sharyland on Tuesday and won 9-3. They are currently sixth in the district.
