PSJA North Raiders take care of business against Wolverines in District 31-5A clash

ALAMO — The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North Raiders are continuing this season’s trek as one of the Valley’s toughest teams.

The Raiders routed their in-district rival, the PSJA Memorial Wolverines, by the score of 10-2 on Friday. The dub for PSJA North now solidifies a three-game winning streak for the squad as they are now sitting in third place within a highly competitive District 31-5A.

PSJANorth stands on the season at 17-6, with an 8-3 district record. As for PSJA Memorial, they stand at 12-15, with a 2-10 district standing.

The Wolverines seemed to be in good standing as they were leading 1-0 going into the third.

However, at the top of the third, the Raiders were able to earn a couple of runs after some overthrows by the Wolverines’ defense.

Bottom of the third, a dropped throw to second by the Raiders’ defense allowed a run for the wolverines.

It was tied 2-2 going into the fourth.

Top of the fourth, Mateo Herrera cracked it to left field for the two RBI. After a couple of sequences at-bat, David Guajardo cracked it to center field for two RBI of his own. A pop fly caught by the first baseman got the Wolverines out of a bad inning.

The Raiders were able to keep PSJA Memorial at bay at the bottom of the fourth.

It was 6-2 going into the fifth inning.

Top of the fifth, Daren Garcia cracked it to center field for the single RBI — 7-2. Then, with the bases loaded, a walk led to another run 8-2 .

To make matters worse for the Wolverines,what should’ve been an out at second base led to another run for the Raiders, 9-2.

It was a tough pitching night for PSJA Memorial as they switched out five pitchers on the night.

The Raiders earned their final run at the top of the sixth while the bases were loaded. A walk led to the 10th run for PSJA North.

Although the score may suggest otherwise, the Wolverines gave up six hits on the night. While PSJA North only had two errors, the Wolverines had four.

The Raiders took a break from district as they hosted Raymondville on Tuesday. They won that game, 12-2. They get back into district action on Friday as they play the McAllen Memorial Mustangs.

As for PSJA Memorial, they were blanked by the Mustangs on Tuesday, 10-0. They will host the McHi Bulldogs on Friday.
