Mission man sentenced for aggravated assault on wife

A Mission man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a family member.

Miguel Mariscal III, who is 30 years old, pleaded Monday for an incident that involved him attacking his wife in 2024.

On Nov. 16 of that year, Hidalgo County Sheriff Office investigators found Mariscal's wife unconscious with severe injuries on her face following a call made for medical assistance. Medical personnel are reported to have observed trame to the victim's face and skull. More so, an evaluation determined that she suffered neurolgocial, along with strokes.

According to a report, Mariscal had told deputies at the scene that him and his wife had been drinking alcohol that evening and he had blacked out. When he awoke, he said he found his wife lying on the bedroom floor. 

As part of his guilty plea, he admitted to causing bodily injury to his wife by striking her with an unknown object.

The sheriff's office said that at the time of the guilty plea, the court made affirmative findings of the use of a deadly weapon and family violence.

The case was heard by presiding Judge Letty Lopez of the 389th District Court of Hidalgo County. Chief Assistant District Attorney Hope Palacios of the Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.

“This is a serious sentence for a serious offense,” said Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio “Terry” Palacios. “Only a coward would do what Mariscal did to his wife. I hope others in our community learn from this case and understand that there are serious consequences for those who harm the people they should treat with love and respect.”
