Courthouse crash: Suspected drunk driver collides into building in Edinburg

EDINBURG — There was a bit of a wake-up call late in the night Sunday as local police and fire departments responded to a single-vehicle collision at the Hidalgo County Courthouse at 11:35 p.m.

According to a release by the city, a preliminary investigation indicates that a BMW traveling southbound on Closner Boulevard crashed directly into the front entrance of the courthouse — which caused severe structural damage to the building.

The suspect who was involved in the collision has been identified as 49-yearold Jesus Maria Alaniz Jr., who is a resident of Edinburg.

For those who have driven near the courthouse, know that there is a entryway space before you can even get close to the front doors.

So, most may wonder how fast the driver was going and for how long.

As a result of the crash, the county closed the courthouse Monday for assessment of the damage and repairs. The Advance took a trip near the courthouse that same day and crew members were addressing the damage.

As of press time, the courthouse remained closed until local officials deem it safe to reopen the building to employees and the public.

The city said that Alaniz was temporarily released from custody while he receives medical treatment. He remains in critical condition.

In that same release, the city said he will be charged with Driving While Intoxicated.

The investigation is ongoing.
