MARJORIE ANNE ESTEVIS EDINBURG —
Dr. Marjorie Anne Estevis, 90, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at her residence in Edinburg surrounded by her loving family.
Anne, as she preferred to be called, was born in Gladewater, Texas and spent most of her childhood in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class at Roy Miller High School. She returned to New Mexico where she had spent part of her childhood with her grandparents and continued her education. She was a graduate of Frank Phillips College, College of the Southwest, Pan American University, and ultimately received her doctorate in education from Texas Tech University.
She began her teaching career in Hagerman, New Mexico and eventually moved north to teach girls’ physical education at Jemez Valley schools. Here she met and married the love of her life and fellow teacher Francisco Estevis, also a native Texan.
Anne was also proud of her years teaching reading and coaching cross country at the San Diego Mission School at Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico.
Francisco and Anne eventually moved their family to Edinburg, Texas where Anne continued teaching reading, became an educational diagnostician, then an assistant principal, and went on to teach as an instructor in the Educational Psychology department undergraduate and graduate students at Pan American University/UTPA.
After retirement, Anne rekindled her passion for writing all types of work. She joined writing groups and eventually created writing and poetry groups where she could mentor other writers. She published two award-winning books with University of Houston Arte Publico Press and went on to publish several other books. She also worked closely with publishers to edit/ publish books for others. Her love of poetry exploded, and she immensely enjoyed performing public poetry readings and teaching others to write. Several of her poems have been included in publishings. She and her granddaughter Alyssa Anne published a book of poetry and became known locally for their tandem poetry.
Anne touched many lives with her teaching, coaching, mentoring, and friendships. She was a life-long learner and a life-long teacher.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Francisco Estevis; parents, Byron and Marjorie Anne Hailey; her biological father, Dudley Rutledge; and her brother Ernest Byron Hailey II.
Dr. Estevis is survived by her three children, Lee Anne (Paul) Wild, Maria Elena (Adrian) Sustaita, Frances Margaret Estevis; five grandchildren, Justin Wild, Jana Wild, Aaron Canul, Alyssa Anne Canul, Alejandro Canul; four great-grandchildren, Kaelyn Wild, Avery Grace Wild, Tyler Kleemeyer, Avery Anne Canul; brother, Michael Hailey; cousin, Corie Rutledge Musgrave; brotherin- law, Ramon Estevis; sisters- in-law, San Juana Estevis Rodriguez, Bertha Trevino Estevis, Ofelia Marroquin Estevis, Sue Hailey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Friday, August 7, 2026, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. A Celebration of Life took place Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Memorial Event Center in Edinburg.
Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
