RICARDO D. “Richie” HERNANDEZ

EDINBURG - Ricardo D. Hernandez, “Riche” 87, of Edinburg was reunited with his loving wife and son on January 3, 2021. He was born April 3, 1933 in Mercedes to Francisco and Josefa Diaz and was later adopted by Federico and Trinidad Hernandez. As a young boy he was the heart and joy of his family. He was an alter server at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and attended St. Joseph Catholic School. Ricardo joined the Texas National Guard in Fort Hood. He would later meet and marry the love of his life, Marcela. Together they would travel to Indiana and work in the tomato and cucumber fields. He was a loving and caring father who worked hard to provide for his family. Throughout the years he worked in the pumpkin fields of New Mexico, the rice fields of El Campo, Texas, and the cabbage and watermelon fields of the valley. He worked for Vale Mayes & Co., Farmers Market and Frontera for many years as crew leader and harvester. He knew his work well and could not wait for the next crop to begin. He took pride in the work he did.

He is preceded in death by his parents Federico and Trinidad Hernandez, his wife Marcela “”Chela”” Hernandez, and son, Rodolfo “”Rudy”” Hernandez. He is survived his sons

He is survived his sons Ricardo (Connie) Hernandez Jr, Ruben (Mary) Hernandez, all of Edinburg, Mario (Melissa) Hernandez of McAllen; two daughters Cheli Hernandez, Belen (Rocky) Villarreal of Edinburg; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His kind heart, warm embrace and caring smile will always be remembered. He was always willing to help his family and friends. His compassion and kindness will never be forgotten. A special thank you to Yolanda Hernandez for her care and support of our father.

Visitation was from 5-8 p.m. with a rosary at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.

Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
