Coach Popovich to not return this season

Hall of Famer suffered stroke in November
"I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future." — Gregg Popovich, San Antonio Spurs Head Coach

San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich will not return to coach this season.

The team took to social media to announce that the beloved, hall of famer coach will sit out in taking the reins for the rest of the season — which has about two more months of play.

Popovich suffered a stroke in November and that was ultimately the reason for him not coaching. The 76-year-old said he is focused on his health. The interim head coach in Popovich's absence has been Mitchell Johnson.

"I’ve decided not to return to the sidelines this season," Coach Pop said in the Spurs release. "Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job and the resolve and professionalism the players have shown, sticking together during a challenging season, has been outstanding. I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future."

It's been a tough season for the Spurs as their phenom center Victor Wembanyama is also missing the rest of the season due to a blood clot in his shoulder.

The outlook for the playoffs is still not the brightest, as the team sits with a record of 24-33, making them a 13th seed in the Western Conference.

They head out to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies on Saturday.
