Economedes, Mercedes make state tournament
Some cats solidified their state tournament berth after capturing the top spot in their respective brackets.
The Mid-Valley Classic 7-on-7 State Qualifier Tournament was held Saturday at both Weslaco High School and Weslaco East. The teams who won the bracket they were placed in earned a berth to the state tournament, which is held from Thursday to Saturday over at College Station.
Over at Bobby Lackey Stadium, the Economedes Jaguars were able to hold off the Nikki Rowe Warriors in the championship by winning the close match-up, 21-14.
The Jaguars went a perfect 4-0 to earn their tournament berth. They were led by John Carreon, who is a senior this upcoming football season. Carreon helped Economedes become one of the mostfeared offenses in the RGV last year with his dual-threat QB abilities to earn a 9-2 overall record.
Over at Weslaco East, the Mercedes Tigers held off Mission Veterans for the narrow win to gain a berth to the state tournament.
The Tigers were led by Louie Rincon, who is taking over the QB position after Diego Bravo graduated last season.
Mercedes looks to be one of the tougher teams this upcoming season as they finished 11-1 last year.
