Football Roundup: Edcouch-Elsa's defense proves itself against McHi
The Edcouch-Elsa defense stopped McHi at the goal line during the fourth quarter and the Yellow Jackets improved to 2-0 on the season with a 17-14 win over the Bulldogs.
The E-E offense tallied 231 yards total and scored one touchdown, but the defense proved spectacular. The Jackets intercepted two passes, grabbed three fumble recoveries, blocked a punt and tallied a pair of quarterback sacks.
E-E quarterback Elijah Trevino gained 147 yards of total offense — 74 rushing and 73 passing — and scored the only offensive touchdown for the Jackets.
Laredo Johnson 49, McAllen Memorial 21
Laredo Johnson jumped to a 35-14 lead at half and never was challenged en route to a 49-21 victory over McAllen Memorial.
Sophomore quarterback Elvis Estrada completed 13 of 17 passes for 329 yards and Johnson gained 484 yards of total offense in the win.
Six backs carried the ball for the Memorial Mustangs and combined for 291 yards on the ground. They were led by quarterback Kane Coy who galloped for 86 yards and one of three rushing TDs for Memorial. Jaydin Soliz and Marco Gallegos each scored on the ground for Memorial.
Aaron Crawford led Johnson's rushing attack with 113 yards on 21 carries. It was Memorial’s first loss of the season.
PSJA 34, Mission Vets 0
Senior quarterback Myles Lopez threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns as PSJA blanked Mission Veterans 340.
Lopez found six different receivers for at least two completions each on the night. Emiliano Fraga caught 10 of those passes for 63 yards. Ryan Vallejo and Caleb Salas each scored on passes of 40 or more from Lopez, whose team improved to 2-1 this season.
The PSJA defense also chalked up six sacks, two from Marco Maynez, and four interceptions to lead PSJA. Lopez leads the Valley in passing yards through three weeks with 799.
PSJA North 58, Donna North 0
North dashed to a 45-0 lead at the half and captured another lop-sided victory to up its record to 3-0.
The Raiders amassed more than 500 yards of offense. Junior back Ethan Guerra gained 102 yards and score a touchdown on four carries as PSJA North used 10 different back in the game.
Junior quarterback Daren Garcia and freshman quarterback Drayden Espinoza combined to complete 6-of-8 passes for 135 yards. Espinoza also tossed a pair of touchdowns, to two more freshmen in Isaiah Garza and Antwon Estrada.
Senior middle linebacker Steven Garza had a monster day on defense with 13 solo tacked, five assists and seven tackles for loss. As a team, the swarming Raiders’ defense finished the game with 23 tackles for a loss.
