Good as glory: Teams spar with one another in Week 10

The tenth week of the high school football season has now reached the endzone.

Regular and district season play is nearing its finish as some teams are the clear front runners for their own respective districts, while others continue to duke it out for bragging rights.

Here’s a recap of a couple of the football games that played out this past weekend.

Raiders take care of business against FB

This wasn’t a state playoff game, but it had all the ingredients for one.

The PSJA North Raiders (9-0, 7-0) defeated the Flour Bluff Hornets (8-1, 6-1) at home to remain undefeated and to stay on top in the District 15-5A DI standings.

Both teams came into this game undefeated and both came out swinging — with the squads trying to pull away from one another.

However, the Raiders proved that defense does indeed win tough games as PSJA North’s defense made itself known to be clutch.

PSJA North recorded five sacks on the night — with sophomore Jacoby Herrera (DE) getting two for the game. In the secondary, Bryan Guerrero and Isaiah Garza made it tough for Flour Bluff’s QB — Lucian Cruz — to get anything going for the night. Granted, this is a team that averaged about 59 points coming into this game. Each had an interception on the night.

On the offensive front, the Raiders are without senior running back Ethan Guerra for the rest of the season due to an injury but Andrew Alvarado worked the ground this game and had himself 125 yards rushing with one TD.

The Raiders will look to cap off an undefeated season against Brownsville Rivera (1-8, 0-7) this Thursday. The Hornets will play Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial (7-2, 6-1) on Friday.

Heartbreak in Harlingen

A game that had great expectations on both teams. For the Los Fresnos Falcons (9-0, 3-0), they stood and still are undefeated after battling a Harlingen Cardinals (3-6, 2-1) team that is finding their groove on the season after a tough start.

This was a game that looked to be in the Cards’ favor as they found themselves up comfortably 20-0 in the early moments of the second quarter.

Los Fresnos though had other plans.

Robert Pineda — the Falcons’ QB — had himself a night full of yardage as he carried the ball 28 times for 139 yards. The three TDs helped Los Fresnos in the 35-28 OT win.

However, it was the 95-yard interception TD return by senior linebacker Juan Sanchez that sealed the game for the Falcons.

Cards’ QB Hassan Woolery dropped back to pass and at the moment seemed to have an eye for receiver Maddox Hernandez as there were three receivers on the right hand side of the field. However, Sanchez dropped back into the secondary for the pick.

Los Fresnos looks to cap the season off undefeated as they take on Brownsville Hanna (2-7, 0-3) on Friday. The Cards take on San Benito (3-6, 2-1) the same day.
