Up for grabs: Week 5 shows tenacity from football teams

District play underway for some squads

It’s somewhat hard to believe that October has already touched down for this football season.

Nearing the halfway mark, a lot of local squads continue to push through non-district play and dabble within their own respective districts — with eyes on the district crown.

Here’s a recap for a couple games that played out this week:

Mission Vets, 38 Harlingen Cards, 37
These two teams are having a contrast of seasons this year, with one on the upward slope, while the other is still working on tightening up some ends as district play looms for them.

Mission Veterans Memorial (4-1, 0-0) has seen a lot of success this year so far, and this past Thursday against the Harlingen Cardinals (1-4, 0-0) was no different.

Both the Patriots and the Cards saw yards of green as they put up some solid numbers. The Patriots had 429 yards on the night, while the Cards had 306.

Patriot Roman Reyna, who is QB, had a solid night with 16-28 passing — tacking on 249 yards. He had a touchdown to add to the statline also.

For the red-and-white squad, senior Noah Huerta had himself a game with three touchdown and 175 total yards on 32 carries.

The Cardinals prepare to play the Cuero Cobblers (5-0, 0-0) on Friday. The Patriots will take on Brownsville Hanna (2-3, 0-0) on Thursday.

PSJA North, 24 CC Veterans, 13
PSJA North is still one of the remaining teams who holds an undefeated record (4-0, 2-0) as they faced a tough Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial squad (3-2, 2-1).

Defense from the Raiders proved to be crucial as they held the Eagles to just 13 points. Granted, the team from Corpus Christi was averaging 45 points before this game.

Senior Ethan Guerra for the Raiders had himself 167 yards rushing, with two touchdowns on the ground.

PSJA North will face Harlingen South (3-2, 2-1) on Friday. The Eagles have a bye week.
