Mavs Take Dub: UT Arlington downs Vaqueros
The University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks visited the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Thursday and defeated the Vaqueros, 58-50.
What initially looked like a game that was in the hands of the Vaqueros, took a quick turn in the second half as the Mavericks went on a run when they found themselves down by 10 with 16:36 left in the second half.
After a turnover by Filip Brankovic — which was stolen by Jordan Lowery of UT Arlington — Raysean Seamster knocked down a three to put the deficit to five after a layup by Bahsil Laster was capitalized prior to the steal.
Later in the half around crunch time, Zae Blake hit a three pointer with about four minutes left to try to give UTRGV a spark but were unable to regain a lead of their own as UT Arlington’s Cameron Jackson had some layups to keep the Mavericks afloat with a five-point lead.
Then, with less than 2 minutes of play, Marcell McCreary for the Mavericks knocked down a three and some free throws to finally put the game away.
On paper, for the most part, UTRGV looked in great shape to keep their winning streak at home alive, which was at 2 before this game. The offense for the Vaqueros was spread quite evenly among Marvhin McGhee III, who led the team with 10. Zae Blake had 9 for UTRGV, as well as Filip Brankovic. Then Koree Cotton had himself 7.
UTRGV also forced 13 turnovers for the Mavericks — with 9 steals on the game. However, the 38% field goal percentage really ailed the team when it came down to the last 10 minutes of the game. The Vaqueros were also outrebounded 29 to 25. Arlington shot about 42% from the field while UTRGV shot 38%.
The Vaqueros’ record drops to 3-6, with their conference standing at 0-1. UTRGV is set to visit the Lamar University Cardinals in Beaumont on Tuesday.
