Men's Basketball: Vaqueros get first win of season
As the basketball was swung from the right wing to the left, the three pointer that was cashed in by guard Marvin McGhee III set the tone not only for him but for his squad as well.
This was the sequence during the first minute of play in the Vaqueros’ first road game of the season. UTRGV (1-1) got the road win, their first dub of the season, against the South Utah Thunderbirds (0-2), 95-72.
McGhee III, who led the Vaqueros in scoring with 30 points, had himself a night on 12-17 shooting. He also had a double-double on the night with 10 rebounds.
The orange squad as a whole were pretty much hitting on all cylinders as they finished the night shooting at 50% — with 57% from the three-point line.
UTRGV was also on the boards for the entirety of the game as they outrebounded Southern Utah, 48-34.
Filip Brankovic had himself 7 rebounds with 11 points of his own. Other notable standouts for UTRGV were Dane Christensen who had himself 11 points and 6 rebounds, as well as Koree Cotton, who had 10 points and 3 rebounds.
For the Thunderbirds, Jaiden Feroah had 24 points off of 8-12 shooting. The defensive effort by the home team did mess with the funk of UTRGV as they forced 12 turnovers.
The Vaqueros will now stay on the road as they travel to Idaho on Tuesday to take on Boise State (1-1).
The first home game of the season for UTRGV will be on Nov. 17 against Southernwestern Adventist (2-1).
