Mustangs stampede past RGC; Bears take care of business
McAllen Memorial used its powerful running attack to gain nearly 300 yards on the ground and the Mustangs improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in District 16-5A Div. 1 with a 42-0 blowout of Rio Grande City.
Junior Jaydin Soliz rushed 15 times for 181 yards and two scores as Memorial jumped out to a 21-0 lead during the first quarter. Sophomore Braxton Speights added three touchdowns on 77 yards. Quarterback Kane Coy only three the ball six times but was effective, completing four of those passes for 46 yards and a touchdown to Michael Alaniz.
PSJA 40, Los Fresnos 24
PSJA overcame a 17-7 halftime deficit, erupting for 33 second-half point to capture a 40-24 victory over Los Fresnos and improve to 3-1 on the season.
Quarterback Myles Lopez exploded for 467 yards passing and six touchdowns and the Bears steamrolled to nearly 600 yards of offense.
Los Fresnos quarterback Robert Pineda also had a large day, gaining 224 yards on 23 carries and the Falcons tallied 460 yards offensively.
Ryan Vellejo caught 21 passes for 244 yards and five Bears’ touchdowns and Ramze Arroyo added 120 yards on five receptions and a touchdown catch.
Edinburg High 12 Edcouch-Elsa 9
In a good old-fashioned defensive slugfest, the Bobcats improved to 3-1 and sent E-E to its first loss of the season, 12-9.
The teams combined for just 399 yards between them, including 148 on the ground for Edcouch and 145 through the air for Edinburg quarterback Aidden Sanchez.
The Bobcats’ defense forced four E-E turnovers.
Weslaco East 23, PSJA Memorial 22
Erick Valdez converted on a Weslaco East touchdown and the Wildcats improved to 4-0 with a thrilling 23-22 win over PSJA Memorial.
East decided to go for two-point conversions on their previous two scores. Aiden Gonzalez, Margarito Pompa and freshman Malachi Rodriguez each scored for East. Rodriguez gained 165 yards on 22 carries for the Wildcats, who trailed 16-8 heading into the fourth quarter. East was successful on seven of nine third-down conversions.
