PSJA North runs away with a victory; Los Fresnos puts on offensive showcase

Darren Garcia completed six of seven passes for 101 yards and a pair of touchdown throws as PSJA North claimed a 42-17 win over Harlingen South.

The victory improved the Raiders to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in District 15-5A Div. 1. Flour Bluff is the only other undefeated team in district and those two teams will collide Nov. 1 at Flour Bluff. The Hornets (6-0 overall) have scored 307 points (51.2 points per game) and allowed just 11.6 points per contest. Meanwhile, the Raiders average 39.6 points per contest and allow 11.2 points per game.

The North defense came out in full force against the Hawks, allowing just 170 yards of offense. North tallied nine sacks, three apiece from Steven Garza Jr. and Rey Martinez. They also forced six fumbles, recovering three of them.

Garcia added 79 yards rushing and North’s Ethan Guerra collected 116 yards rushing and 40 yards receiving.

PSJA North led 42-3 at the half.

Los Fresnos 70, Sharyland 33

Los Fresnos outscored Sharyland 35-7 during the second half and claimed a 70-33 non conference win over the Rattlers.

The Los Fresnos offense, led by junior quarterback Robert Pineda, tallied a whopping 570 yards. Pineda completed 11 of 14 passes for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns and scored six rushing touchdowns on just 15 carries for 217 yards.

Sharyland quarterback Calvin Harris also enjoyed big numbers during the offensive shootout. The junior threw for 372 yards and four touchdowns.

Sharyland fell to 3-3 overall and begins District 15-5A Div. 2 play this week against Mission Veterans. Meanwhile, Los Fresnos (5-1) opens conference play against San Benito.

Brownsville Veterans 45, Sharyland Pioneer 21

Brownsville Veterans improved to 4-2 overall with a 45-21 victory over Pioneer, showing the offensive juggernaut that the Chargers are loaded with.

Alvin Trevillion rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 carries and Veterans chewed up nearly 700 yards offensively in the win, Cesar Belmontes contributed 155 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Chargers and quarterback Storm Montoya threw for 120 yards and rushed for another 80.

Brownsville Veterans finished the game with 545 rushing yards on just 56 carries, a 9.7 yards per carry average.

Pioneer had two backs eclipse the 100-yard mark. William Goodloe rushed for 119 yards on 15 carries and teammate Dylan Tijerina added 111 yards on 12 carries. Both back also found paydirt once apiece.
