UTRGV baseball takes series against McNeese

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s baseball team took a conference series, 2-1, against McNeese State.

The Vaqueros had three games in three days this past weekend as Sunday was the clincher in a 10-7 win that went down to 10 innings.

In that game, UTRGV showed their poise by earning themselves three runs in the 10th and by holding the Cowboys to zero to earn the victory.

Kike Cienfuegos, who is a Sharyland alum, got his sixth win of the season as a pitcher. In seven innings, he threw six strikeouts and allowed three runs while on the mound.

That wasn’t the only game in the series that went to extra innings, though. On Friday, the Vaqueros pulled off a close one in 11 innings by earning the 8-7 win over in Louisiana. On Saturday, UTRGV fell 5-3.

With this series win, UTRGV now sits in fifth place within the Southland Conference. As for McNeese, they are at seventh.

UTRGV was slated to play the No. 6 team in the country that is the Oregon State Beavers, but the scores were not available as of press time.

However, this weekend, UTRGV comes back into town for their last home stretch against Incarnate Word. The first game is Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Edinburg. The second is Saturday at the same time and Sunday’s will be at 1 p.m.
