UTRGV finesses, finishes non-conference slate with dub
The UTRGV Vaqueros brought home another win for the Rio Grande Valley this past Saturday as they took on the Texas Wesleyan Rams.
The 61-13 victory officially has the Vaqueros finishing their non-conference games with a clean, undefeated record.
Similar to how high schools play in their respective districts and gear up for district play in the early weeks, it’s the same ball game for colleges and universities.
This upcoming game, the Vaqueros have themselves quite a bit of a test as they take on Southeastern Louisiana over at their house on Saturday.
The Vaqueros have been turning some heads on the local and national front as this perfect 4-0 record puts them as the second brand new FCS program to ever have such a start, a release by the university said. The only other school to ever have such a start was South Alabama back in 2008.
Even more, the university out of the Valley got some nods in the FCS Coaches Poll. Similar to what you see on ESPN with FBS schools being ranked in the top 25, the FCS does the same thing. Although not nationally ranked, the votes in the Coaches Poll is essentially a nod — meaning the team is doing some great work this season.
The Vaqueros had a night full of yardage as they finished with 530 for the night. In addition, they had 21 first downs. On the other hand, the Rams did have some decent yards for the night with 325. They also had 16 first downs. Overall, Texas Wesleyan can maneuver on offense, but what really hurt them were the five turnovers.
On one of the first plays during a drive by the Rams, Alijah Prosser had intercepted a pass and ran it back 52 yards for the score, a UTRGV report said.
Eddie Lee Marburger had another solid night for the Vaqueros as he finished the night 17-23. He tacked on 223 passing yards, as well as 47 rushing yards. He had a pair of touchdowns as well.
With this performance, UTRGV officially averages about 58.5 points a game and they only allow about 8.5.
The Vaqueros are still one of the 15 remaining undefeated football programs in the FCS, according to a UTRGV report.
The team will play the Southeastern Louisiana squad to open up conference play at 6 p. m. The game can be watched on ESPN+.
