UTRGV football loses lead, regains composure and wins road game

Away games are never easy, no matter what sport or level.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros have officially entered a two-win streak with their road game victory against Prairie View A&M with the score of 27-21.

The first quarter of the game seemed as if the Vaqueros were going to cruise in the program’s first away game.

After the first, UTRGV had themselves a comfortable 17-0 lead and at the end of the first half, were up 20-7.

The Panthers though, had different plans in mind.

The first score by the Panthers was in the second quarter by Cameron Peters with the one-yard rush into the endzone. Then in the third and fourth, Tevin Carter put up some numbers on the board to give a 21-20 edge over UTRGV. Both scores by Carter were rushing.

The one play that sealed the deal for the Vaqueros was the seven-yard rushing touchdown by running back Nathan Denney.

Denney had himself a solid night with rushing for 101 yards, and also catching five passes for 37 yards.

Receiver Tony Diaz, had a touchdown himself — in addition, he had 121 receiving yards. According to a report by UTRGV, he was averaging about 20 yards per catch.

For those who missed the first home game against Sul Ross State, fans of the Vaqueros will be able to catch their home team play in Edinburg on Sept. 13 when they take on Langston University.
