UTRGV stops East Texas A&M in its tracks, finishes season in commanding fashion

The first football season of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros has officially come to a close, but on a high note.

The Vaqueros took home their final dub of the season against the East Texas A&M Lions (3-9, 3-5) by the score of 33-14. The win marks a 9-3 overall record for UTRGV in its inaugurual season, and 5-3 in Southland Conference play.

The Lions drew first blood on 18 plays as they drove the ball down 80 yards to set up EJ Oakman on the one-yard touchdown.

Momentum though is like a pendelum, when it comes to sports.

Late in the first quarter, Logic Hudgens intercepted a pass from East Texas A&M’s quarterback — Eric Rodriguez — and returned it 52 yards for the score.

Defense for UTRGV was on par as they forced the Lions to three turnovers. The Lions, on paper, could have turned the game around multiple times as they garnered 314 total yards on the game.

UTRGV quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger was all business on Saturday night as he racked up 141 passing yards and two touchdowns. Running back Nathan Denney helped drive the ball down the field on multiple drives on 26 carries for 160 yards.

The dub solidifies the perfect home stretch on the season, as the Vaqueros went a perfect 7-0 at their house in Edinburg. More so, they finished the season tied for third place in the Southland Conference with nationally ranked Lamar University, who UTRGV lost to 23-21 earlier in the season.
